Managing Medical Emergencies in the Dental Clinic

Picture
Course Description
This hands-on immersive class offeres dental professionals the opportunity to practice managing medical emergencies in their clinic using their own medical equipment.  The course is customizable to meet the needs of individual clinics.  Through interactive discussion, select medical emergencies are reviewed, including signs and symptoms, basic pathophysiology, and interventions.  Additionally, items in the emergency kit including equipment are demonstrated. After the discussion, clinic staff participate in a series of realistic simulated emergencies designed to augment content presented during the discussion.  A debriefing session follows each simulation where participants discuss actions taken during the simulation.

Objectives
1.  Recognize signs and symptoms of select medical emergencies (may include chest pain, syncope, anaphylaxsis,
hypoglycemia, cardiac arrest, stroke, seizure, foreign body obstruction).
2.  Demonstrate appropriate interventions with rationale for patients experiencing select medical emergencies (may
include chest pain, syncope, anaphylaxsis, hypoglycemia, cardiac arrest, stroke, seizure, foreign body).
3.  Evaluate & document patient response based on interventions.
4.  Review clinic emergency kit and emergency procedures.
5.  Demonstrate safe and effective use of the clinic's emergency equipment (emergency kit, oxygen delivery systems:
     tank, mask, bag/mask, AED).
6.  Describe when it is appropriate to activate EMS.
7.  Demonstrate appropriate staff roles/responsibilities and effective teamwork during a medical emergency.

Comments from Past Participants:
It was great to use our equipment & supplies.
We all take CPR, but applying it to a real situation is different.
I've never experienced anything like this before.  We should do this every few months!
The instructors were very knowledgable & approachable.
