Recognizing and Responding to the Deteriorating Patient
Course Description:
Upon review of medical records, the Institute of Medicine has stated there were some signs of clinical deterioration starting approximately 8-12 hours prior to a code situation. This course focuses on how to recognize these subtle changes in patients to prevent further deterioration. Participants are actively involved in a variety of realistic simulated scenarios to help promote critical thinking. After each scenario, an interactive debriefing session allows time to discuss assessment techniques, interventions, and effective communication methods. This course is taught at Regions Hospital or it can be offered to a group at your location.
Objectives:
1. Anticipate and recognize early signs and symptoms of deterioration/critical illness.
2. Initiate early intervention and treatment of the deteriorating patient to prevent unnecessary transfers and cardiac arrests.
3. Discuss initial assessment and early treatment for select conditions.
4. Incorporate age specific and culturally sensitive care.
5. Complete systems-based 5 minute physical exam.
6. Integrate data from medical record to complete assessment and impact decision making.
7. Incorporate effective communication methods.

Comments from past participants:
Realistic Scenarios! The debriefs help to pull the information into my practice. Instructors are very knowledgable. A great safe environment to practice our assessment and communication skills. |
