Pediatric Emergency Management

Course description:
The Pediatric Emergency Management course is designed for nurses working with the pediatric population. It is an immersive four hour class focusing on the identification of signs and symptoms of a pediatric patient who is deteriorating, timely and effective management, Team STEPPS communication techniques, utilization of resources, and review of organizational specific policies and procedures. The course format consists of a didactic portion followed by realistic simulation scenarios and interactive debriefing sessions. Simulation scenarios are developed to be specific to the organization's patient population and identified learning objectives and/or needs.
Objectives:
1. Recognize, respond, and initiate interventions for early signs and symptoms of deterioration in a pediatric patient
2. Identify potential complications based on mechanism of injury and injury patterns
3. Demonstrate use of resources related to age-specific care
4. Complete systems-based 5 minute physical exam
5. Integrate data from medical record to complete assessment and impact decision-making
6. Incorporate effective communication methods and team
