IV Skills/Venipuncture
Course Description:
The IV Skills/Venipuncture is a 3.5 hour course designed to provide medical professionals with proper techniques for intravenous line placement as well as venipuncture. The course consists of a didactic portion which includes site location, site considerations, supply preparation, aseptic techniques, communication techniques, and potential complications of intravenous line insertion. Following the didactic portion, participants practice IV insertion using actual supplies and special IV training arms. A variety of mannequin arms are available to simulate large veins to small difficult veins. Vessels are filled with simulated blood. At the completion of this competency-based course, participants are able to successfully introduce, instruct, correctly insert, and secure the intravenous lines and venapunctures in a simulated setting.
Objectives:
1. Describe patient assessment findings that must be considered during site selection
2. List 3 considerations for catheter selection to accommodate the patient’s vascular access needs
3. List 3 complications from peripheral IV catheter insertion
4. Demonstrate Peripheral IV insertion accuracy
5. Demonstrate Peripheral IV catheter removal accuracy
