Critical Care Orientation

Course Description:
The Critical Care Orientation is a course for nurses new to the progressive care environment. It is a six week program designed to incorporate a variety of adult learning modalities. The orientation process consists of system based didactic material followed by additional learning modalities including case studies, small group discussions, hands-on skill stations, audience participation games, realistic simulation scenarios, and interactive debriefing sessions. This format was developed to provide an opportunity for learners to apply the acquired knowledge, practice skills, and integrate assessment data to foster development of critical thinking skills in a safe environment.
Objectives:
1. Recognize system-based alterations in a patient’s status through an integrative assessment.
2. Demonstrate accurate interpretation of medical information and assessment data.
3. Utilize Regions Hospital’s policies and procedures appropriately.
4. Utilize effective communication techniques during interactions in the simulation scenarios.
5. Demonstrate prioritization skills with effective management of the patient’s care.
6. Demonstrate critical thinking skills through identification of signs & symptoms associated with pathology processes during simulation & debriefing exercises.
