Course Description

Picture
Transitioning from practice to clinical faculty can sometimes be a “trial by fire”. This course is designed to guide you through that fire. With a shortage of clinical nursing faculty, practice experts are being asked to teach nursing students, yet have little exposure to teaching strategies and learning theories. This immersive program offers clinical faculty the opportunity to practice the teaching role in a series of realistic simulated scenarios. Participants have an opportunity to review and discuss actions taken during each simulation in a debriefing session. During this reflective discussion, clinical faculty will navigate through challenges that occur in the clinical setting. This course is intended to give them tools in their tool kit.

Comments from Participants

“Clinical instructors thought the simulation prepared them for clinical teaching, increased their confidence, and assisted them to provide student feedback.”
Journal of Nursing Education, 2015; 54(8):468-471

“Simulation experiences provide an opportunity to observe and learn from each other. Clinical teaching is usually done in isolation and clinical faculty rarely have the opportunity to observe each other in practice”
Nursing Education Perspectives, 2018; 39(5): 319-321.

“Clinical faculty reflections described simulation as a powerful and safe strategy to enhance their ability to effectively facilitate learning in a clinical setting”
Educational Innovations, 2008; 47(9), 431-434.

Objectives

  1. Valuing the importance of building positive relationships with clinical unit staff.
  2. Implement three techniques to promote student critical thinking skills
  3. Utilize three constructive feedback strategies on student performance
  4. Adapt teaching to match varied student learning needs
