Acute Care Nursing Orientation

Picture
Course Description:
This immersive one-day course allows the nurse, new to acute care, an opportunity to integrate their knowledge into a variety of real-life acute care patient scenarios. Through interactive discussions, simulations and activities, the participants will learn how to recognize common early signs and symptoms of patient deterioration. Communication methods and team techniques are also discussed to assist the nurse in accurately conveying their concerns to other team members. This course can be customized to meet the needs of a variety of institutions.

Objectives:
1. Anticipate and recognize early signs and symptoms of deterioration/critical illness.
2. Initiate early intervention and treatment of the deteriorating patient to prevent unnecessary transfers and cardiac arrests.
3. Discuss initial assessment and early treatment for select conditions.
4. Incorporate age specific and culturally sensitive care.
5. Complete systems-based 5 minute physical exam.
6. Integrate data from medical record to complete assessment and impact decision making.
7. Incorporate effective communication methods.

Comments from Past Participants:
  • Situations were pertinent and ones that I will see on my floor.
  • I liked applying what I learned in a simulated situation. It helped to make it more real, and see how to apply the information into my practice.
  • The class was very involved which helped me feel comfortable asking questions.
  • A very supportive environment! It was clearly designed to facilitate learning!
