Acute Care Nursing Orientation

Course Description:
This immersive one-day course allows the nurse, new to acute care, an opportunity to integrate their knowledge into a variety of real-life acute care patient scenarios. Through interactive discussions, simulations and activities, the participants will learn how to recognize common early signs and symptoms of patient deterioration. Communication methods and team techniques are also discussed to assist the nurse in accurately conveying their concerns to other team members. This course can be customized to meet the needs of a variety of institutions.
Objectives:
1. Anticipate and recognize early signs and symptoms of deterioration/critical illness.
2. Initiate early intervention and treatment of the deteriorating patient to prevent unnecessary transfers and cardiac arrests.
3. Discuss initial assessment and early treatment for select conditions.
4. Incorporate age specific and culturally sensitive care.
5. Complete systems-based 5 minute physical exam.
6. Integrate data from medical record to complete assessment and impact decision making.
7. Incorporate effective communication methods.
